Loose Stones

Top  Previous  Next

72 MahJongg tiles of 6 different colors and 6 different symbols (2 tiles of each symbol and color combination).

Object

To place all of the tiles onto the layout.

Layout

12 columns and 8 rows (96 spaces) - At the start of the game, 4 tiles are automatically placed at the four corners and two tiles are placed near the middle.  These 6 initial tiles are chosen to represent all of the 6 colors and 6 symbols.
The remaining tiles are placed in the stock (wall) at the top of the screen, where the next tile to be played is displayed face up.

Play

The face up tile in the stock is placed on an empty space in the layout, according to the following rules:

Tiles must be placed next to at least one matching tile, and must match all adjacent tiles (left, right, top, or bottom, but not diagonal).  A matching tile is one that has either the same color or the same symbol (or both).
If the tile is placed adjacent to only one other tile, it must match that tile (color, symbol, or both).
If the tile is placed adjacent to two or more tiles, it must match each tile either by color or by symbol.

To play the tile in an empty square, simply left click there.  Right-clicking will show all legal placements for the tile.

Notes

The game is won when all tiles are legally placed within the layout, leaving the stock empty.  Note that there are 96 spaces but only 72 tiles, so the layout will not be completely filled; however, there are enough tiles that placing tiles with multiple neighbors is essential.
Loose Stones is a less restrictive and easier variation of MahJongg Stones.
